Help with a friends gaming PC

I have a friend who is looking at buying a new computer to play games such as Call of Duty 4, World at War, and probably some old shit like Command and Conquer. He's got an idea into his head that the following machine will be able to play games like Call of Duty 4.

  • Phenom 9550 (2.2Ghz) Quad Core
  • 2GB RAM
  • 320GB HDD
  • Micro case (no expansion space)
  • 8200GT 256mb/X1200 256mb

I have advised that neither the 8200GT or X1200 cards will be practical (it only just plays on an X1700 512mb at medium at 800 x 600 :S which is about the same as the 8400GT (really bad basically). I advised everything else would be fine (apart from maybe compatibility problems with old games under Vista).

When you throw smokes on CoD4 or WaW, the fps drops from a normal 25-27 to about 5. Apparently this will not happen (according to the friend). So, to avoid him wasting money as he will not listen to me, can someone please just clarify these facts for me?

Thanks very much for any help.

That old card play COD4/WaW? Maybe on 320x240 resolustion with everything on low, then it would be playable.

Fact is, that old card will not run those games! Does it even support dx 9? or pixel shader 2.0? no. game will nt run. end of disscusion. :D

That's exactly what i said, but he said he would only believe 'experts'. Not me. . .

The fact that I have built more than 3 super pc's means I am not an expert :D

Thanks for that proof.

Huh, it doesn't go as low as that. Minimum is 640 x 480. And the frame rate would be something like 5fps average, maybe 0fps during a smoke grenade or airstrike!!! :P

And it wouldn't play because you need directx 9 for the smoke and particle dust from strikes etc. And 10fps is like a badly streamed chinese TV channel over a dial up connection :)
