help with arctic silver 5

I think i installed the AS5 wrong, my P4 550 temps with a Swiftech MCX775-V heatsink, with a 60 cfm fan idle temps are around 60. so thats pretty high, i think.

Can i use A Benzalkonium Towelette to clean off the arctic silver 5, say on the back 0.40%Benzalkonium Chloride?? this is the only stuff i have found it in a first aid box.

is there anything else i can use i dont have any isopropl alcohol.

hi,

no, use pure alcohol (or perfume) instead, or aceton (without oil) and don't touch with the fingers
I recommand that you put AS5 only on the CPU, a good quantity (let's say like a green pea), only in the middle of the processor and put over it immediately the cooler, without trying to spread the AS.

you will read here and there that a very small quantity of ASA is enough.
that's not true for the 550, 560 and 570 processors.
Use ONLY Artic Silver 5 !!
FYI, the PIV 550 is known to be very hot (Tom's hardware review) and as far as you don't exceed 72 celcius in burn, that's OK.

thanks for the quick response, so i can use my roots cologne to clean off the cpu, and the heatsink??? I thought that you werent supposed to because of the scent and it leaves residue. I built my system a month ago and my idle temps were around 45-50, and load got up to 65+. but for some reason my idle temps now are around 60??

so i was thinking of reapplying the as5. so i cant use the antispetic towelette thing??

that's right, they say 200 hours.

the best is really to buy natural aceton, to clean nicely with a soft cloth and to put enough (not too much!) AS5 as I told you, in the middle.
then just adjust the cooler and turn it a little bit before screwing it.
with the P4 570J I also had a lot of problems but now everything is OK after applying more AS5 than I did at the begining.
40/50 and 70 are NORMAL temps for these processors.
that's what you should get after reinstalling the cooler.
BTW I've tried 3 different coolers...before i got the right one, the Zelman 7700 CU. (the 7700 ALCU is less powerfull)
also be sure your PSU gives enough power to your computer (at least 400 W for this Prescott!)

I know it looks strange but I've fount out that for heavy coolers (like the Zelman), if you spread the AS and screw up the cooler, after few days the thermal grease is everywhere but not in the middle of the CPU, where it should be.

This is because naturally the heatsink is not perfectly flat. Just take 2000 grit sand paper a little water and sand it down. This will allow for better contact and heat dissipation. Also I would recommend spreading it out (with a razor blade keeping in mind that you are starting out with a pea size drop).

P.S. Oh by wet sanding to a mirror finish this should also lower your CPU temp by a few degrees C.

I'm guessing 2000 grit paper is ultra fine and the water is to help smooth things out. Nonetheless, wouldn't sanding create more imperfections and negate the whole purpose? Afterall, we are talking about trying to get a flatter surface done by a machine.

You'd think so but no. Sanding always smooths things (that's why you do it ). machining, while it does smooth stuff out, leaves small imprefections.

Assuming the base metal is of good quality, the imperfections are mainly caused by the machinging process. The roughness/amount of imperfections are related to the machining feed speed, amount of material removed, heat removal (ie water), etc. With sanding the only purpose is to make the material smoother. Yes there will be imperfections but the finer the grit of the sand paper the less/smaller the imperfections.

No, you just might not get the full performance (ie temperature drop) from the AS5 until it sets in.
