Help with building gaming compuer

Hi all, I could use some advice on what parts to get for the best bang for my buck. I want to use the computer to play games like FarCry2, TF2 and Dragon Age when it comes out, with room for upgrades in the future. 1,500 is really the max i would like to spend so if i could build a solid computer for a little less that would be welcome. The only thing I really have picked out so far is the monitor, it's not as huge as some other ones but being used to a 18" CRT I think i'll be just fine with it. I plan on taking the parts into a local computer dealer to toss them some business, they said they would put it together for me and install the OS for 150.

Any build suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you can't build a complete gaming computer for less then $1,000 then your doing something wrong.

Only suggestions I would make are...

4gb DDR2 or DDR3
600-750W power supply
Radeon HD 4850 or 4870 or their Nvidia equivalent
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 or E8500 or a Core 2 Quad Or Core i7

Intel Core 2 E8500 is the way to go for the processor.

Perhaps a motherboard and a PSU to support dual GPU.

Why a dual core? If you have that much to spend you could futureproof yourself. I7`s are clock for clock faster than dual`s. I can game at 4ghz and my processor is equal to a 4.6ghz dually at that speed. Heres a good setup for the money:
Motherboard $249.99
ASUS P6T
CPU $289.99
Intel i7 920
Ram $152.99
Gskill 6gb 1600 DDR3 (3x2gbs)
Harddrive $79.99
640 Western Digital 32mb 7200RPM Sata II
Computer Case $119.99
Antec 900
Power Supply $139.99 (119.99 With MIR)
Corsair 850TX

Now at this point the build comes to 1012 before taxes. This build so far doesn`t have a video card so depending on what resolution you play here is some choices.

The best video you could get and staying under 1500 would probably be: $394.99 (369.99 after MIR)
Geforce GTX 285
Or you could get this card for $80 less $289.99 (274.99 after MIR)
Ati 4850x2

Putting the component together is not that difficult. I suggest you try it yourself, and if you don't get any success, then take it to store and spend that $150

By the way, the list from THERMAL-REACTOR is good. However, I personally would go for a single 4870 instead as you'd need $100 for OS, $190 for monitor, which leave you $200 for video card.

Yea I wasn't even thinking about an OS or monitor. The 4870 is a great choice and for the OS I would go 64bit Vista. If you don't want to go vista then I would downgrade the ram to only 3 gigs and get xp 32bit. Also I just noticed the list I put together doesn't have a CD-Rom but those can be bought for 30- 40$ (Dual layer DVD burner)

Jesus, if theyre the prices in America ... do I shed a tear or what.. your i7's are ~$240? We have to fork out upwards of $500 AUD for an i7... anyway.. go ahead and get the e8500 (have a read on how some say duals are better gamers), get an nvidia 9800GTX or GTX260.. something like that. Motherboard obviously Asus and the rest is pretty easy..

yeah i7s are way too overpriced with the motherboard and DDR3. If you really want a quad perhaps a AMD Phenom 2 would be good. Those are great for gaming.

i7s are overpriced, I'll be one to admit it. I did buy one though. If you want a budget Quad go for the Q6600. That thing is an OC BEAST! I have one in my other system that I have at 3GHz stable and thinking about raising it some more until I have to back it down.
