Help with built-in microphone

Hi fellow forum users ^_^

I have a problem. I have a built-in mic, however it seems it doesnt work when I tried video calling someone on facebook.

My friend told me that there are some settings at the bottom right corner, which lets you choose external mic or internal or integrated etc. However on my screen there was nothing there.

I can hear him perfectly fine, but cannot talk to him because he cant hear me.

Please help me, other programs I am fine, such as talking on Steam, or MSN. Just not Facebook. I am starting to think that this only happens to video calls, because other than that it is very fine, such as voice calling.

Please help me.

Thank you everyone

As they keep adding more features and functions to FB, it seems to be getting a bit more glitchy, IMO. So, I would guess that your hunch is right as I have not tried that specific function since I use Skype for that. Just have your friend get that instead as it should run better and smoother anyway...

Oh, and try to keep a question to one thread only, not duplicate it; thanks! :)

Thanks for reply!

Sorry about duplicates, not really sure where to post.

So, you think it is just Facebook's end, not my problem? I hope so too. Do you think it will be fixed soon though? Coz at the moment videocall Facebook isnot available to everyone. It will be over the next few weeks though.

I just did video call with a friend on MSN, it worked fine.

SO I guess this is Facebook's end? I hope they will fix it soon. I think it may be that because ..well....they add new things and things may be glitchy ?

What do you guys think?

It probably is... if there was a problem with your microphone it would probably be brought to your attention in Device Manager. If you check it and see that it's functioning properly, I would feel confident that it was Facebook's glitch.

Go to the audio icon in the system tray and make sure that the MIC is ON. In Vista and & 7 right click the speaker icon in the system tray, select recording devices, then double click your Microphone, then look under Levels tab to see if the MIC is set to mute. If it is muted, un-mute it and OK out of the audio property windows.

After that open sound recorder under Accessories on the start menu in the All Programs list. Click the record button and talk, make a lot of noise , yell, whatever... then play it back and see if you hear anything. And make sure you don't have anything plugged into the MIC jack.

If you don't hear anything through the mic that's built in you could try a MIC that would plug into the MIC jack. Then re-try the sound recorder again and talk into the external mic and see if it records anything.

If the MIC works properly, it may be that you don't have the most recent version of Java, as I believe that Vroom (the voice calling app) runs through Java.
  1. Go here to see if you have the most recent version of Java.
  2. Click the "Do I Have Java" link
  3. Click "Verify Java Version" if you have the most recent version, great.
  4. If if you do not have the most recent version, then get the most recent version. But, when updating Java it will ask if you want the Yahoo Toolbar. UN-CHECK the box next to "Install the Yahoo Toolbar".
  5. Let the installer finish and re-try Vroom.

Thank you so much I appreciate it.

Yes it is not muted and like I said my mic works on MSN and everything else, it is only facebook.

And yes, I have the latest Java too.

= / Maybe it really is Facebook's end?

Yes, since this is a new feature of FB and your mic works on everything else, they may not have that part of it working right now (it is still in the test phase, anyway) or they may not have all the different mics compatible with the client yet.
