Help With Buying A Laptop

i'm looking to buy a laptop for college use, but i dont know anything about laptops, and this would be my first laptop. i would be using a laptop for mostly typing (microsoft word) and the internet. i would probably spend somewhere around $1,000 u.s. dollars, max, maybe $1,100-ish. i see some laptops for around $500, $600, are those laptops good? what should i look for in a laptop? problem is, i dont know anything about memory and hard drive and all that good stuff. which laptops would you recommend?
