Help with custom computer

Hey all, first time posting. I had a computer custom build by a friend about 2 years ago. A few weeks ago when I went to cut it on there was no power. Checked connections and still nothing. I have changed the power supply and its showing the green dot on the motherboard. Sometimes it will try to cut on for a split second then cut right back off. Any suggestions on what it could be or where to look? Thanks everyone!

Sounds like a short somewhere. Or possibly failed hardware that is stopping the system from turning on. A couple things you can do.

1. Disconnect everything not needed to boot pc such as hard drive, cd drive, any external devices, usb devices. All you want connected is video card, monitor, ram, cpu, motherboard. If machine turns on after disconnecting everything then try connecting things back 1 by 1 until pc doesn't work and then you know whats bad.

2. Build the pc outside of the case on a piece of cardboard and see if it works correctly. If it does, then motherboard was shorted out against the case somewhere.

Good advice, but... yes I know this sounds silly, but it solved a problem a friend was having before... try a different power cord.
