My external HD is stating that I need to reformat it, this drive has thousands of files on it!!! how can I retrieve the data prior to it reformatting?

Is it a usb model? That's a typical problem where the usb models is the Fat32 factory partition on them. If the original autorun.inf file is intact unplug the usb cord while the system is off and replug it back once the system is turned back on and you are at the desktop. The new hardware detection process and scan of the drive will see the installer appear to see the software reinstalled.

The best advice is that sees a Fat32 partition on it would be backing everything up once you have access again and reformatting the drive to NTFS. The drive can be simply plugged in to see the autoplay popup window appear while Windows Explorer will have reasy access to the drive.

The above shows what happens here when starting the system up here without it plugged in and suddenly available once plugged in after the partition was reformatted.

"The quickkey you provided for file download was invalid. This is usually caused because the file is no longer stored on Mediafire. This occurs when the file is removed by the originating user or Mediafire."

This is why seeing the original software inplace until reformatting to NTFS works. Even after a reformat you simply unpack the download you get generally in a zip file from the support site onto the drive itself.
