Help with HDMI cable not connecting

Hi,

Ive always connected my laptop to my tv via a hdmi cable, but when i went to plug it in today its just not working. The laptop is making the noise of being connected and when i remove the cable it makes the sound of being removed but the tv will not pick anything up. I tried plugging in my mums laptop to see if it was the cable and it worked fine! I just dont understand why its not working, could anyone shed any light on this for me? Its really frustrating! Ive also tried going into the resolution center and changing a few things around on there and still nothing!
 
Have you tried pressing the fn + display key to push the video to the Tv?
 
Ive tried that aswell but still nothing. Its weird because theres no sound coming from my laptop when the cable is plugged in. and when i switch the tv to hdmi2 which is the port its in the laptop screen goes black and then comes back on again. I have a toshiba satellite if thats any use?
