everytime i start up my computer everthing goes gine until i get to my desktop. it shows my wallpaper and nodesktop icons, and then a black window pops up saying:

the norton ghost is stopping...

after a minute, they screen closes and i have nothing on my computer except my wallpaper. i cant right click or windows. i can however, ctrl alt del.

so can anyone please help me and tell me whats wrong with my computer?

thanks!

try going into safe mode and disabling some start-up programs, and if explorer goes blank again, go into task manager and goto file then run and type explorer

i went to safemode and it doesnt let me go to the add remove programs. i went to msconfig, unselected norton items in the services and startup tab, then i reset my computer and now the norton ghost prompt doesnt show up, but my desktop is still blank and still only shows the wallpaper, but something showed up that said : internet explorer is not working, options were, dont send and debug and more or something.
i pressed debug and nothing happened it just went away and nothing else ever came up
im thinking that this has nothing to do with norton? idk maybe im wrong

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del-> go to Processes -> File from menu -> and New Task (Run) -> type explorer.
Should help.

thanks. that last tip helped.
ok so here's what i do, i start my computer, nothing shows up, i ctr alt delete and run explorer. now i have 2 explorers in processes and i have to close the first one and then my desktop shows up and everything is fine. i restart my computer, but i have to do this process every time.
ummm it says my bellsouth anti virus or something is expired? do you think that this could have something to do with my computer being like this
thanks and need answer asap.

Switch off Restore Point, pop in OS CD and type sfc /scannow in the Run...
It'll scan system files on your comp.
If that won't try and uninstall whatever is expired. Might help, never know :)

I might be wrong (usually am)

If when he types the explorer command in and his desktop comes up Ok, this points to that explorer starting from the Windows directory where it should reside only.

Has he picked up a nasty in that another explorer file has been downloaded and is being acted upon.

Restore Point:
Right Mouse Button on My Computer -> Properties -> System Restore -> check Turn off System Restore... -> Apply

sfc:
Put Winows XP CD into CDROM
Click on Start -> on Run -> type: sfc /scannow.
