ok, my desktop (AKA: free computer i put together from spare parts) is not really working now......
its got a scrap-tastic dell mobo that u have to turn on with a "key" and it will turn on and go for a little while then it will just shut off.......
my guess is the psu becuase its onl got 6amps on the +12v rail. would that be the problem? oh and i don't think anything is overheating becaue i felt the hs the graphics card, the hdd, the chipset and the psu and they were all like just like they were before i turned it on.
this worked a good while before, and ever was able to leave it on overnight a few nights.

BTW its got:
Dell mobo
p4 2.5 @ 3.0Ghz
dvd burner
15gb hdd
128mb FX5600
512mb ram

the main reason it would shutdown would be because of the cpu, but the psu could be the problem, does it have integrated graphics? if so, try that and get rid the the 5600, since that may be whats trying to use more power then what your psu can give out.

ok, i'll try it, but now its going but it won't load windows......i have a feeling its the dell mobo, BTW my bad, its a p4 2.53ghz i saw 2.5 3ghz and i thought it was a 2.5 @ 3ghz.

i got it started, and i'll be watching it to make sure it don't shut down, haven't changed anything yet......

ITS WORKING!!!!!!!! Ya, its been on for a good bit of time now and working perfectly.

but i jsut have a HS not a FHS and its getting kinda hot even though the psu fan is blowing on it, but its blowing on it from the wrong side so it doesn't go through the fins.......do you think its at a safe temp? i can still touch the hs but its just hot to the touch.

the fan won't work becuase its hookup is a differnt shape....its still got the 3 basic pins so should i modify the fan's little plastic thing? i found a thing it fits on an old p3 mobo, so i know that its just the dell mobo being weird about it not fitting, so should i pull off the plastic on the fan power hook-up thingy, and now idk whats with the computer it will start then run for like 3 minutes then turn off....

now i have it working again, lets see if it shuts down....i also rulled out overheating now since i cooled it off and put it back on and it was still doing it and the hs was still pretty cool.

there, all edited now i just have to delete the rest

OK X24 I'm pretty sure I've told you this before but...

Use the E-D-I-T button!

On this page you've made 7 out of 9 posts which isn't normal.

ok, so its not heat, so that narrows it to the psu or the mobo........um.....could it hopefully be something else?

OK, problem solved even though i don't know how i did it.......
its been running for an hour and a half perfectly......now all i have to do is add the other hard drive, fix the modem and dvd burner, and it'll be set....

EDIT:
Good news! i ripped the plastic thing off the dell mobo and the fan works now, and i know have a home-made fhs and its brought down temps by a good chunk and now it works perfectly!
