Help with Nero

Just had to buy a new PC as my ancient one finally gave up the ghost. The new one has a built in cd./dvd writer and comes with Nero essentials already installed. However it will not recode video files ie mpeg avi etc, nor will it burn DVD's. When you try and carry out these functions you get a message that says "in order to carry out this function a full version of Nero will have to be purchased". It then takes you to the Nero homepage and asks for £47 to upgrade.
This seems a total rip-off as there is nothing in the PC instructions that says that there is only a trial version of Nero loaded. Is there a way round this or can someone recomend some software that will allow me to recode video files and then burn them onto DVD ?
Thanks

If nero is installed then most likely its a trial/limited version. Open Nero and look for the license info and see whats listed. Most likely you'll have to buy the full version.

"Nero Essentials" is a bare-bones version of the Nero Suite. I had to buy the entire Suite just to get the Wave Editor function!

"Nero Essentials/OEM
Nero Essentials/OEM are versions of Nero that do not contain all the features of the retail version.
Please note that the recorder manufacturers, who bundle their hardware with Nero software, decide which features will be implemented in the Nero Essentials/OEM version so Essentials or OEM versions do not have the full functionality of a full version."
