Help with new SATA drive

So I decided to purchase a Samsung SpinPoint 120GB Serial ATA150 Drive to replace my "old" Samsung 160GB IDE drive, which i bought an external enclosure for. Im having a few problems getting this thing back up and running. (I have a MSI Neo-FIS2R mobo and do not have the external HD hooked up at all while attempting to get it up and running) First question is where to set the jumpers on each drive? Second is, when i try installing xp pro it says it hasnt found any hard drives on my computer to install onto. How i get it to be recognized? If anybody can help I would appreciated it very much!

OK, I don't know for sure, but I don't think you have to set jumpers on your SATA drives. I know I forgot to look at it, and when I powered it up, my bios saw them right off. All might not be like that, I'm not quite sure...

As for setting them up, you should have some kind of disk. You know when XP asks about installing RAID controllers? You need to tap...F8 if I remember right. Then pop the disk in and follow the directions.

i hope you're not trying to boot your ide drive on the external enclosure cuz is not gonna work. also there may be conflict if you set your ide master and then install the sata drive.

copy all your stuff to the sata drive or just leave it as is and install a fresh copy on the sata drive and then after that install your old ide drive as primary slave.

Err, I don't know why i asked about jumper settings for the SATA. However, my problem is now this. I dont have a floppy drive to load the RAID controller The_Other_One was speaking of (oh and fyi its F6, haha). So I took one out of an old computer, and for some reason its not being recognized, I think I may have a bad IDE floppy port on my mobo. Is there a way i can load this another way, such as with my USB key?

Your USB key requires Windows to be operational in order for it to work, so that's out of the question... If you burn it to a CD and then set the CD drive as number 1 in the boot order then, hopefully it will boot the needed stuff from the disk... Oh, and btw, the F key that you hit to bring up that menu depends on the motherboard that you have and the bios settings on that mobo, it varies from mobo to mobo. Never can have it easy with PCs :)

Hi, First thing to say is u will need to get the right SATA drivers for ur chipset or else it will not detect ur SATA HDD.

They can all be found HERE.

U do not need to set any jumpers on SATS HDD's.

SATA drivers can only be installed via "Floppy disk"

When u start the windows setup u will see a prompt at the bottom of the screen saying "Press F6 to install third party SCSI or RAID drivers". Press F6 and u will get to a screen which prompts u to specify ur SATA drivers.

Insert the driver disk and press "S" select the appropriate driver from the list and press enter. On the next screen check to make sure u are installing the correct drivers and press enter to continue. The rest of the setup procedure is the same as normal.

[NOTE] DO NOT REMOVE THE FLOPPY DISK UNTIL SETUP HAS COMPLETED AS WINDOWS READS OFF THE DISK A NUMBER OF TIMES.

Another thing to take note of is in ur bios make sure u have ur first boot device as "Cd-Rom" and the second boot device as either "SCSI,HDD0 or Serial ATA" all motherboards are different so you will just have to test to find out.

If thats the case, and the SATA drivers can only be installed via floppy disk, anyone got a clue as to why the floopy disk drive isnt being picked up?

Have you connected the floppy ribbon the right way, Remember the red stripe that runs down the cable has to be inserted onto pin number one.

If you have connected the floppy up correctly it could just be a bad floppy drive.

[EDIT] Is the floppy being detected in the BIOS, and is it it set as drive A in the Standard CMOS features.
