help with new videocard

I'm using my brother's computer right now because my computer isn't turning on. I am really not a computer kind of guy, but it feels good to pretend like I know what im talkin about.

Basically, I just bought an extra 512 RAM and a Radeon 9800 pro (the reason being my old video card cant recognize the monitior and its old, and I wanted some more RAM).

After taking out and putting in my new video card, and putting in my new RAM to my Gigabyte GA-7VT600 harddrive (which I don't know if its good or not), everything seemed to be okay, until it froze after installing all of the video card data from the CD

After restarting, taking forever to load my windows XP, and typing in my password, it was struggling to go from the password screen to my desktop, when it suddenly powered off... for good.

Now, whenever I turn on my computer, it struggles to turn on, then gives up ( the fans go for about .25 seconds, and then just die ). ALSO, this little orange light on the corner of my MoBo is lit up whenever I turn on my computer, and the only way to turn it off is to unplug the power from the computer.

I looked in the online manual, and that corner light is very close to what appears to be "RAM_LED" which is the RAM light...

I've tried putting in older video cards, no video card, no RAM, just my old RAM, etc etc etc, the same thing happens

Im guessing its my MoBo thats dead or my power supply or something with my RAM... sorry for rambling on and on, I'm just really upset!! I shouldnt have just thrown in a new video card and RAM without reading precautions.

Also, im not sure if this is the right thread, because it deals with many things, so I apologize ahead of time

Anybody have any idea? thanks a LOT!

Just to be clear you tryed putting it back to it orginal setup (orginal ram and video card setup togeather) and it no longer working?

If this is true check all your connections to make sure you did not knock anything loose. Espcially the power cables to the motherboard.

I think the pwr LED turning orange means it not getting enough power. I not 100% certain because I could not find orange any place in the manual.

Also what color is the RAM_LED(number 6 in the pic)

The RAM_LED (number 6) is the orange-ish light I was telling you about. Its the only thing that seems to be on.

All the connections are correct... doubled checked. Why would the RAM_LED light be showing, though? That's why I'm a little confused. It's not my RAM causing this, is it? In the page from the manual you got, the #6 is actually 2 little boxes, and I see those 2 boxes on my motherboard, and the light is right below it.

So I should consider a new power supply? Thanks for everyones help so far... I just want to find out for sure if it's the power supply I need.

PS - Any recommended power supplys? Hopefully around the 80-100$ range

a lot of psu are priced between $40 to $100. Mine is a Demon PSU 580w and i only payed $56.89 for it.

Whoah! Something seems odd about this deduction. The RAM LED is on, and orange (which I'm guessing means that the RAM is either seated incorrectly, or the wrong type). Maybe (I don't know this specific board, but...) the power LED isn't going on because there's a problem with the RAM that needs to be fixed before it will admit to being able to run. Try putting the original RAM back in before you spend 50-80 dollars on a new PSU.

I had a similar situation... my PSU died but the LED on my motherboard was still lit. Every time I pressed the power button, my case fans would spin for only a second or two before powering down. So, this could well be a PSU issue. If I were you, I'd buy a new PSU from a store that'll let you return an open box item without penalty. That way, you could test things out and return the PSU if it turns out that that wasn't your problem.

To me the LED RAM light on the MoBo is probably a warning that something is wrong with the RAM, as Neuromancer suggested - the light system replaces the more traditional Beeps on some MoBo's for BIOS errors etc on startup.

You can download the manual for your MoBo from http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/Manual/Manual_GA-7VT600.htm

Unfortunely I'm on dial-up, so couldn't download the 4.5MB PDF file! sorry! But from that you can see what the RAM-LED means.

Also, what type (speed) of RAM did you buy, and what CPU are you running? The fact it worked for a bit then died, sounds to me you may of bought RAM that was too slow for your system Bus, and its now been over-clocked and fried, but may be wrong. May just be faulty RAM to begin with. As already suggested, try putting your original graphics card and RAM back in and see if that resolves the problem, if so, replace each item one at a time, and identify the source of the problem. If replacing the original companents still doesn't sort anything, then maybe you've REALLY got problems...

^ thats exactly what my problem is. thanks a lot, ill go finally get myself a PSU.

I saw that manual, and it doesnt really give much help about that light. All it says is that its the RAM_LED light, and make sure not to remove any RAM while the DIMM_LED is on.

I tried putting EVERYTHING back the way it was... even not putting in any ram, my original ram, same with the video card. Thats why I am so confused. That is also why I am really considering that it is my power supply, especially since the guy a couple posts back had the same exact problem.

One more thing... The RAM that I bought was a PC3200 ONLY DDR400 Optima Memory stick.. 512MB. The manual says it supports DDR DRAM PC2100/PC2700/PC3200, so that shouldn't be a problem, right?

Bigger doesnt mean better.
