Help with poping sound

Hi, new here, just need some help please

My sisters desktop started freezing as soon as you logged in, meaning you couldn't do anything!

I thought the only way to fix this is to reinstall windows... but first i would put the HDD in another PC as a slave and make a copy of the files so she doesn't lose them

When i put the HDD in the other PC, i had an issue with the boot priority and it kept wanting to boot from my sisters drive, which is a problem.

I checked the jumpers which confused me as there wasn't one for just slave, only "master-on slave-off" "cable select" and "limits drive capacity to 32 GB".

The drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.7 80Gb

after changing some of the jumpers around to try and get it to work, there was a loud POP came from within... I don't know where it came from but i instantly pulled the plug and haven't tryed again..

Any thoughts on what it was?

Many thanks
Mike

Sounds like a major Hard Drive failure. Maybe it shorted out when changing the jumpers to the wrong place. Maybe the disk exploded. Its hard to tell without taking it apart. I wouldn't take it apart unless its totally dead. Even if it is, other than the files that's only like a loss of $40.

im not sure.... I've looked at all the capacitors and all the components on the motherboard and all seems ok.. I've even looked at the PSU but without taking it apart i cant see much..

cheers
