help with removing windows xp

hi,
I have one problem..
I am using windows xp, but now I want to install other OS. But I don't want to create new partition, and I can't format C disk because of several GB which are needful to me. I used google, but I found only these suggestions. Is it impossible to uninstall windows and then install other OS without formating and creating new partition?

Make backups on DVDs/CDs of the data you need? I mean if you really want, you could find some sort of bootable OS(BartPE for example) and delete the files like that then install on the harddrive, but things would probably be best to reformat first, espcially depending on what OS you want to use.
