help with start menu

Despite building my own computer, I still dont know how to do basic functions in windows
I dragged microsoft word from the prgrams menu to my desktop, but now I want it in the programs menu and it isnt there. How do I get it there?

personally, i found the easiest way for me, with xp. is to click the icon with the right mouse button and hold it down. drag the pointer over the start button, then highlight all programs and move the cursor to where you want the icon, then let go of the right mouse button. in the pop-up menu, left click on copy here. or create shortcut here.

drag it back onto the start menu where it originally was in the first place.

if its not letting u, you will have to allow drag and drop in the start menu.

right click on empty task bar>properties>start menu>customize>advanced
---then enable dragging and dropping.
