Help with what computer I should get.

I would like to get a new desktop computer, but I do not know what I would need in it (what processor, brand, video card, sound card, expandable ports, hard drive, memory, other stuff)

This is what I would like it to do...

Run fast (no lag)
Fast downloads/fast internet (i know this is also based on my connection)
Photo editing
Memory/Hard Drive
I don't play many games
DVD burning (double layer)
Great music sound (I already have a good logitech 5.1 surround system)
Multi-tasking
QUIET
Nice Asthetics (nice flat LCD)
TV-tuner and PVR

I don't know too much about computers so I don't think I could build it myself if that is hard. If anyone knows any pre-built systems they could recommend, or any recommendations at all. I know I want to go with an AMD processor I just have no idea which one. I would appreciate all the help I could get!

A basic Dell with a P4 would probably be nice... They are very quiet machines(I used many at work) Just make sure it has at least 512M RAM and you should be fine with no lag. Upgrade to say a Sound Blaster Live for 5.1. PVR, you can grab a winTV PVR for about $60-$80 off newegg(probably better than what dell would give you and you aren't as limited)

Um, yeah, that should be a good one...

Run fast (no lag)
Run fast and no lag are two mutually independent events. One is bound by the computer, the other is bound by the internet

Fast downloads/fast internet (i know this is also based on my connection)
As long as you know that it is ONLY based on your connection (unless of course you're trying to run a multicast server + input stream audio + do two DVD encoding tasks + run a SQL server on a single processor)

Price?

Violates the requirement for AMD processor (and not to mention Dells arent THAT quiet)

But in any case, with say a budget of $1000
- Maxtor DiamondMax 10 320GB [16MB, NCQ, SATA3.0]($141)
- AMD Athlon64 X2 4200 [S939, Manchester, ADA4200DAA5BV]($400)
- Abit AX8 [KT890]($95)
- Patriot Signiture Series 2x512 [CL2.5]($72.99)
- Thermaltake Big Typhoon($54.99)
- NEC 3550A($38.99)
- Antec Sonata II + 450W [12V@32A]($99.99)
- Sapphire X300SE 128MB($49)
SUBTOTAL = $951.96

Lemme know if you need the monitor to be in that budget but that is a hell of a performance box with very little sound (now if you cant build and/or dont have time to learn -- its easy, then you can just take the spec to a local computer shop and have them build you one to spec)

From what I spec'd, that enough to get a machine up and running in a stable manner. If you think/want more cooling, you can do that later if you choose but the machine i specd is good to go
