Hi. Thank you for looking at this thread. I am trying to format Windows ME. I have start up disk and windows Me cd. When I go to MSdos to format c:, it says "bad command or file name". My exact command is "a:/format c:". what is wrong and how can i format my hard drive? Thank you again for looking and helping.

Also, if the computer has only 128MB ram, would it be ok to install Windows XP on it? Plz let me know.

you're using the wrong slash.

if you are installing windows xp just use the cd, it is easier that way.

set theme to classic, set computer for performance disable screensaver and wallpaper and it will be okay.

I would like to format the hard drive first and that is where I am having a problem. Please refer to my original post. Thank you

XP is very slow on 128MB. I'm afraid I don't know where to get it but if you can find somewhere to download it from just use Fdisk or CFdisk (CFdisk is more graphical and easier to use)

first...check to see format is on the floppy...second..ur typing command wrong.. its "format c:" then press enter....

don't run xp on 128mb ram..it would be painfully slow... if u wanna upgrade i might try windows 2000

First off, XP is not that slow with 128MB RAM, at least not doing just basic things like surfing the web. If you need proof, I'll video "pinky" performing(my 1.4GHz, 128MB RAM, 20GB HD machine)

As the rest have said, formatting can be done through the XP setup and is probably best to do so there. However, if you must format before hand, you may simply type a:, then format c:.

BTW... I thought about filming this but it's too late to bother :P Because...geeze, it is actually 4am! Eh, anyway, the computer booted AND loaded Firefox in 36 seconds. I'm pretty sure everything else was done, but it's hard to tell as this machine has no HD light :P So...XP can run just fine on a machine with 128MB RAM... Now back to the question.
