Help with wireless network

Ok, I have two computers, the comp upstairs is the main comp for the wireless network. The internet works fine on this one. After we formated the computer downstairs the internet worked for a while before we got a new card(old one broke). Now since the new card is in it wont connect to the preferred network. It never gets past acquiring network address. My dad has tried to fix it but gave up. He says he will get help but he hasnt yet.
 
yes we installed the card properly.

And, no the card is not the same as the router. Neither card in both computers are the same as router. Every thing is different. The one upstairs, the one that works is a D-link. The router is Belkin.

The brand of wireless card makes no difference unless you're using an "N" standard, or any of these standards developed to get beyond "G" speeds. And still, the router should work fine at regular B or G speeds.

I'd check your firewall settings, perhaps disable anything like that to see if it works. Have you tried connecting to any other networks?

Also, you don't happen to have a WEP or anything like that setup on your router, do you? I've seen some programs that just try to "acquire network address" but never really prompt you about a security error.
