Hey guys, how's it goin?

Just the other night my dad and I were talking about me getting a new computer. He told me that as long as I earn the money, I can get whatever I want. (which is what I figured he would say) Im starting to work for it right now, so thought I should start making decisions as well so I get the best I can for the budget.

What I need help with, is what would be the best graphics card(s), for around $400 USD, give or take some. I dont care if it's from ATi or Nvidia, just whatever you guys think is best. My whole budget overall is around 1000, but i'll most likely save up more than that, maybe up to about 1500 to include a new keyboard, mouse, and monitor. But those I all have a general idea of what im getting, so I mostly just need help with the GPU(s).

Thanks in advance, I know alot of you here have a great amount of expirence, which is why im asking you, and not some teenage kid at best-buy or some other electronics store who doesnt know what GPU stands for haha ;)

Thanks! :)
Mike

I can afford more than just the 8600GT, and if I got the 8800GTS it would be the G92 version, which I have thought of doing.
Thanks for the imput :)

The above suggestions are a tad tame, definitely, especially considering a $400 budget.

$214 MSI GTS would be my suggestion if you were buying right now. Smexy. Alternatively you could buy a Evga GTS and make use of the step up program and the extra change you save should that be compelling. *Step-up, offered by Evga, allows you to buy a card and within 90 days trade it in for full recompense towards another card*

Since you're not buying now, it would be wise to keep the mortar wet; Prices will change, newer cards might be released, whatever, making present decisions less than reliable.

Hermeslyre- Thanks for that imput :) , I have thought of getting one of those, they sound like they have had great reviews and are a pretty solid card.

Angel of death- Im actually looking for a little more oomph (if you know what i meen:P) than just a 9600, although I hear they are very close in quality to the 8800GT, But thank you for that suggestion as well:)

Itronix- I have thought of getting one of those as well. I'm just not sure if it would be better to get one of those, or 2 HD3870's for crossfire. Since I havnt ever done Crossfire/SLI, If I went with a single ATI card, that would definatly be the one. Thanks for the suggestion, it's greatly appriciated :)

I'm basically trying to get as many ideas and suggestions for the best I can get, so im going threw reviews and whatnot on all of these cards, and your imput is basically another "tally mark" next to the card you suggest. In the end, i'll get what seems more "popular" if it's really good, I get it come buy time (which isnt terribly far away)

Thank you all, keep it coming! :D

That's cool! I went through the same type of thing. My budget was like half of what yours is, but I have been checking and asking questions just like you. Hermeslyre helped me A LOT with my decision. I finally went with a 8800GT 512mb that should be here tomorrow or Thursday. Keep asking; eventually you will figure it out!

sweet, the GTS(G92) seems popular ;)

I want somthing that will play BF2 and CoD4 with a breeze, being able to go on high settings with no problems. I may buy Crysis, so I would like to run that on medium to high settings as well without problems. And this will need to last me another few years, being able to keep up with the advancing world of games.
