Hi guys,

Recently i bought a new monitor and plugged it in to find that it didn't work, neither did my old monitor. The computer started to beep at this time too, so i opened up the computer to check what was overheating.

After opening it up, i found a heatsink sitting on top of the video card, it had fallen off my motherboard. It was originally located next to the CPU but had fallen off onto the video card.

Is my motherboard completely fried? Or is it just my video card? I can't really tell because the computer doesn't work at all.

well i would think that heatsink next to the cpu would be the northbridge or whatever its called haha. have you tried putting the heatsink back on? its possible it isnt working cos it overheats to quickly without the heatsink.. or its already fried.

Thanks for replying so fast =]

I'm pretty sure i saw somewhere that if something were to operate with a heatsink, it wouldn't last more than 10 seconds. I haven't got any of that thermal compound (argh such a hassle), but i'll be sure to try it soon.

hahahahha ok... well im guessing thats the northbridge but im really not sure..

your best bet is to try it out with the heatsink back on... is the board still under warranty? put the heatsink back on and send it back hahahhaha.

Pwoah no way, have had this computer for like 4-5 years already. Will try that, get back to you. Thanks mate.

haha do you have msn? would be easier to discuss this... :D

but yeah. if it doesnt work with the heatsink back on the i reckon it would have to be fried.

wait till tomorrow sometime when the majority of the U.S members are online. then you'll get some decent advice instead of my far-fetched nonsense.

haha
