Then I pressed the thing on the heat sink (Its the thing tat looking from the front of the snorkel is on the left). And I cant get it back. My brothers gonna kill me if he finds out or tries to turn his old computer back on so help please or am I completely screwd. Hi, chill out, things like that dont break that easily. Take the snorkel thingy out completely, you can put that back at the end, i dont have a dell nor have i ever seent he heatsinks they use.

Just take the green thign off, then take the heatsink/fan cpmletely off then take a look at it and try and work out how exactly it would fit back on, then attempt it. Thigs like heatsink require ALOT of pushing, they need good contact to the cpu ya see, so dont be afraid to give a good hard shove.

Obviously have everything turned off, get lots of light in there so you can see preoperly. Im suer someone else will be along with specific instructions who actaully has a dell but i dont so thats the best i can do.

Ok but I cant figure out how to take the snorkel off anybody with that model know how? On my 8200 it just pops off but I think its permenetly stuck on the 8100 (I hope its not)

it cant be permanent, look for any hidden screws, perhaps underneath it, if not the give it a good hard yank, anyway, how the hell is he going to know if you jsut sanp the green thing off, like he ever looks inside it...... does he?

Yeah ok I guess your right he probably wont lookm but I still want to be safe and at least make it look like it is ok so that If he ever turns it on and it explodes we can blame dell not me.

I'm worried about the fan that is just dangling form a wire inside the green the if he finds that out I'm in trouble

well look at that...i'm using a Dell Dimension 8100 right now. I know what you're talking about (the green snorkal thing) that's a airduct. I took my computer (well parents) apart many times but havn't tried taking the snorkle off before.

and i'm a bit confused. i thought you couldn't get the snorkle off, and if so how did you manage to get the fan off and get to the heatsink?

The fan has a little clip that is in the middle of the snorkel clips. I pressed this and now it's is disconected. The clip for the heat sink was under the snorkel, but I thought it was a snorkel clip. I pressed it and cant figure out how it was before. It is still on the cpu, but I think it might slide off. Basicly the fan is trapped in the snorkel.

So does anybody know how to get the fan back in place/remove the snorkel?

EDIT:OK guess I will have to live in constant fear of my brother

Soo any help... luliuboy... praetor...

this might help a little:
http://duhvoodooman.com/powrleap/P4N/P4Ninstall.htm

also, note this: "To remove the heatsink in the Dimension 8100, there are two clips holding the unit down on either side (front and back, as this photo is oriented). These are easily removed by depressing a thumb tab at one end of the clip, then popping it off the retaining tabs on the processor socket frame. " see web site for ref. good luck and let me know....
