Ok, I have a Dell Inspiron M5010. I was playing an online game and whenever I finish with the game the computer goes super slow. So I decided to just unplug it and take out the battery so I could get a fresh restart. The problem is that when I did that the screen was black and I got 7 beeps of equal sound and length. My fan was not working at all. I was told it might be a problem with my heatsink, so I ordered a new one. I got it today, put it in, and the same thing happens. Oh! The motherboard heats up, especially about half an inch from where the processor is. (Processor and CPU aren't the same thing, right?) Fan still doesn't work. I just spent $47 to buy and ship it from Texas to Georgia. Do I have to buy a brand new machine, or what? All the connections are connected. Oh, also, I can't really hear the hard drive either. What's going on? Any help would really be appreciated.

Bad news

Remove the battery. Unplug the AC adapter. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Put the battery back in. Plug the adapter, and try starting up.
If that doesn't work, i've got some bad news for you -- your laptop's motherboard, or the processor, has failed.
Apparently, it's a common issue with your model (Inspiron M5010).
It's caused when the motherboard fails to communicate with the processor, resulting in a POST fail and lockup before boot.
If your computer is under warranty, call up Dell tech support and ask the technician to look at this link --->> http://dell.to/ZDzg5r
If it's not under warranty, and you are comfortable opening up the laptop yourself, power it down, open it, reseat the processor (take the processor out and put it back in), and reseat the BIOS battery. Try turning it up and see if it works. If not, you'll need to contact Dell for an out of warranty service.

Thanks, I Hate Toms. However, I can't reseat the processor because it's soldered to the mother board. I did reseat the bios battery and the CPU, but neither of those worked. I'll try holding the power button down for 30 seconds and see if that does anything. I've heard bad things about this unit, but I got it for $180 new in the box, and I had it for two years under BestBuy's service policy, but that expired so I have to either pay to have it fixed or get a new one. :/

7 beeps on that model is a processor failure, but as we all know, processors rarely go bad. So it's most likely a motherboard issue.

Has it been dropped recently?

I only ask because on my M90 I got a processor failure code when the plugin to the processor fan had come loose after it was dropped. Not sure if the newer dells would do it too, or have a different error for that.

Otherwise, it could mean you need a motherboard.

Thanks, Voyager. Wolfking, no, it was never dropped. Dell sucks! I had probs with this machine like 2 weeks after I bought it. Never going with Dell again. They suck memory sticks! :(

I hate people like this. (nothing personal). Gets one bad product from a company and assumes the entire company sucks. I have never had an issue with Dell computers, and I have used quite a few. I can personally vouch for the Latitude and Precision laptops. They are rock solid.

But your call. If you say they suck, then keep on that path.

Mind you that you bought a cheap Inspiron, which do indeed suck. Dell Latitude and Precision laptops are far better quality, as well as their OptiPlex and Precision desktops.

Oh, and if you had issues when you first got it, you should have contacted them and had it repaired under warranty instead of waiting until the warranty was up and complaining. That's your own fault.

Voyager, I did have them repair it. One of their techs came out here, switched out the hard drive and gave me a new hd. I actually should've gone with a better brand. And wolfking...if you don't want people to take it personal, you should not have used the phrase "I hate people like this." That wasn't necessary. :/

Maybe the way he worded it was unnecessary but he does have a point. I have owned three Dells and non of which were business class and great computers. If I would have bought a Dell or any brand for that matter and within the first 30 days gave me a problem I would have exchanged it for something else or same model, error on your part. Some times products can get messed up on the assembly line and that can happen on any electronic you buy.
