I dual boot with Linux and Xp.. and i want to get rid of Linux.

Will just deleting the linux partitions and reformatting them work, or do i need a new MBR.

Please tell me how i can get rid of Linux, i want my HDD space back. :(

you need to wipe out the master boot record, like you previously mentioned. If you have a 98 disk ready or a free dos disk

www.bootdisk.com

you can use the fdisk /mbr command from a dos prompt, or boot off of a xp cd and run recovery console and use the fixboot and bootcfg commands to edit the boot record and boot ini

I think you do need a new mbr.excute "fdisk /mbr" in dos mode.and delete the linux partition .

nope when booted off a DOS disk you are in dos, thus the dos command works

FDISK doesn't care what OS you have loaded a boot sector is a boot sector. I wipe linux machines all the time with fdisk when I have to use them for windows.

what ever you dop don't just delete the partionfrom XP when I did that with a linux partion is messed up my computer for weeks and coused me to spend 2-4 hours a day on it.

most linux partitions have a swap partition as well so you would have your linux file system (reiser, ex3, whatever), your ntfs, and your swap

killing the master boot record may not totally fix your problem you may need to rebuild the mbr after you wipe it out. The fixboot command would do that.

but just so you know anytime you change partition schemes, even with an app like partition magic, you run the risk of data loss. It is possible to resize them with out losing data, but I would strongly recomend you back it up incase there is a problem.

However, if windows is on there you can kill the boot sector and then the boot.ini file will start to load windows in the boot strap process. Don't forget to back up your data
