Help!!!!!

when my girlfriend is trying to start her laptop a black screen comes up saying:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

does anyone know how to sort this?

what operating system if its xp put the xp cd in and boot to the cd and then do a repair option and run chkdsk/r and it should fix that problem
