I tried to play a bit with my computer and now I have a little problem.

What I did is that I shut, removed the Cd-drive(which worked about once every 5 times) and put an older one which worked, as far as I'm concerned. Anyhow, I just switched those 2 pieces and I tried booting my desktop and it wouldn't do so, it just tried to detect something to boot from, failed and said there was a boot error. So I replaced the other Cd-drive and instead of trying to boot from anything, it beeped twice and said there was a boot error.

What could my problem be ?

Check the jumpers on the back of the CD drives, perhaps they are both trying to share the same spot... two masters or slaves can cause the system not to boot.

Put one in a master jumper, the other on a slave and try it again.

Good luck!

Not quite sure what that means, but I will have a look... all I know is that I placed everything the same way it was before... anyhow, I'll look.

Yep, I'd bet money that that's the problem.

ok, well... I went back to see it...

The master goes from the mobo to the HD and then to the Cd-drive, that's the way it was before and that's how I left it. Then, I noticed that the HD was not powered(did not had wires going from the PSU to the drive itself), is that normal or is it possible that I unpluged it when I struggled to first remove the wires from the Cd-drive the 1st time.

Edit: Also, to add details, it beeps twice and then once, so 3 times in total.

I am doomed to buy a new computer right away. I had planned to do that sometime soon, but not now!

Also, I wanted to build my own, but if things go like that when I try to mod my comp, I fear I might screw myself pretty bad. what do u guys think ?

But if I had such problems with this, which is not solved yet, what will happen if I try to build one on my own ? Won't I risk to ruin my "new rig", provided that I do buy one ?

Nah. Im pretty sure you can handle it. If you decide to build one just check back with us to make sure everything is compatable. Its easier than you think.

Don't buy a new computer for th sole reason that you current one doesn't work at the moment. If everyone did that, they'd be buying a new computer ALL the time.

Well, I had plans to buy myself a new computer, but I figured I could wait until the end of the summer since its not the time where I use it the most, but if I can't fix my computer to work again, I will have to get one pretty soon cuz waiting until the end of the summer would just be too unpractical!

So if anyone can guide me through fixing my computer, it would be greatly appreciated!

First of all go into BIOS and check the boot order, should be C drive. are you running two CD/DVD drives? If so, make sure they go on the cable like so
Primary| <Master
Second| <Slave
|
Mthrbrd| <of course Motherboard

If one drive is all you have then, remove the jumper or put it in single setting, some allow you to remove it for single setting. Jumpers sound like the problem, other than that, resort to PC eye, he is great with this type of thing.

I had problems with my drives, too.

Ok, to answer a few questions, I am not running 2 cd drives and actually if it could simplify things, I don't even need to use 1 since the one I had for the past 2 years was always working randomly.

Not too sure what a secondary cable should look like, but what I know is that for now, there is the Master going from my mobo, to my HD and then to my cd drive.

Not quite sure what you mean about the jumper, but I'll leave that for now.

My other problem, which seems a little bigger now. I'm not sure what I've touched, as far as I'm concerned I haven't touched anything, but now my screen appears as if it was not even connected to the computer when in fact it is well plugged in the back of it. The Video card seems well plugged, but I know nothing about that. Anyhow, now I can't get to BIOS cuz I can't even get my computer to really open. With the last changes I made to it, it beeps once and seems to be ok, but I could be wrong since, as I said the screen won't even show as if it was connected!

Thanks for the help guys, I may not have successfully fixed my computer(yet), but I realize I may not be the easiest person to help out since my overall knowledge isn't stellar.

OMG........have you had somebody curse this thing, jeez,

Jumper pic here

Okay, that wire from the CD drive should go from the motherboard>Hard drive>CD drive. Make sure of that, check for power to both of them(4-pin connector "Molex").

Does your video card have a power connection? Is it connected through a PCI port on the motherboard or is it onboard? What kind of monitor do you have? Does it support DVI and VGA?
Make sure that the video card is firmly snapped in if connected through PCI.

Sorry to fire so many questions at you

No, I have never had anyone curse this thing, it was cursed from the 1st day I got it and its a wonder how I managed to keep it for something like 3 years.

From the look of the pic u gave me, I do not believe anything is connected to the cd-drive. There is the power, the master and some other thing for the sound (is that possible ?).

The power and the path of master cable is connected like you said.

Not quite sure how my video card is, I know its not on board video, to me it seems connected directly to the mobo, like there is a slot in the mobo and the card is there.

Not too sure about my monitor either, its a very basic CRT monitor, not too old and I doubt its the monitor the problem as I took my computer to another monitor which did not work with that computer either.

I will try to look at the video card, but as far as I'm concerned I had a look at that and without being too rough, I tried to push on it to see if that was the problem, but without any success :(

Don't appologize for asking questions, you are trying to help me and I can't help but being very grateful!

Ok, so I unplugged my video card a few times and plugged it back in and now I can see what appears on my monitor. But my first problem remains.

Here is the message I get when it boots, it beeps once. Then, like 10-15 seconds later, I get 2 quick beeps followed by 1 beep and the message reads as follow: Pri Master Drive - ATAPI incompatible
Press F1 to resume

If I press F1, it says:
Boot failure
Insert Boot diskette in A
Press any key when ready

Now, I don't have any boot diskette, so I am unsure of what the problem is or what I can do. I will keep looking and hope for someone to answer me and help me.

Thanks!

Edit: you probably already know after reading the rest, but I just discovered that the first boot device was the diskette A and there is no way I can set it to be the HD.
