Hi, im new here, and could use some advice from veteran computer users. I'm getting an Hp with an AMD Athlon 64 3300+ that operates at 2.4 GHz, 512 MB DDR, 160 Gigabyte hard drive running at 7,200 rpms, and a 256 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 video card. I understand that the processor is fast enough, along with the other specs, but I'm a little worried that I won't be able to play the more modern games with the Video card. The games I'm likely to be playing are Half Life 2, Doom 3, and other modern games. I don't need to be playing them at the top settings, middle or even low will be fine for me. I just want to be able to play them. If anyone could tell me if I should consider a more powerful card, or stay with what I have, that would be great. Also, my very maximum for a new card would be about $250 give or take.

You really don't need a better video card for the games that are out now. I wouldn't worry about upgrading, because you can't step up to PCIE with that PC anyway, i dont think. I'd stick with what you have and save the money.
