Hey guys,
ok here's the problem. I got a 3.0 ghz p4 off a friend. And from another friend i got a fairly cheap mobo, can't remember the exact name, but its nothing special.
The problem is, when I hooked everything up, it seems like the mobo is fried, even though its nearly brand new. The fan on the cpu runs, and everything else is powered, however the mobo seems to be dead. And when i take out the ram and start up the comp, it doesnt make any noise or give me a signal, like it shuold sicne there's no ram.

I kno that the processor works cuz it was tested b4 it was given to me. I'm thinking that the 300W p/s is not sufficient enuf for the mobo. Before I go out and buy a new p/s .. i just wanna know if you guys kno of anything else that mite be causing this.

Thx

If the mobo was dead the fans wouldnt kick in

A missing ATX12?

Only if they're connected through the mobo(which they should be, but who knows
Irrelevent (mostly) ... how are you gonna turn the comp on without the mobo?

On older computers the turn on/off switch goes directly through the PSU, not through the mobo. But the power still goes through the mobo. On newer ones, it goes through the mobo, then to the PSU.

LOL too much aggression not enough foresight :P The PSU connect to the mobo and it switches via the buttons on the front of the case which coincidentally are connected to the jumpers on the mobo thus meaning that the mobo turns the PSU on (hence we call them "switching power supplies" rather than "self contained autonomously powering up devices"). Even my PS/2 circa 198-something does this.

"it"?

My 2 old computers' power switches go directly to the PSU

lol yes yes they do (as do mine) but the mobo doesnt take power until you tell it so (mobos are semi-active devices)

You have a way of being ambigiuous intentionally or otherwise. Depending on how much or how little you do honestly know "it" could have been a whole bunch of things. Take this post which was in reference to your ambiguity [which you then ignored] for instance http://www.computerforum.com/showpost.php?p=58212&postcount=10

You do love picking on me.....:) but I know that I prolly deserve it:D

And I didn't exactly know what he meant by "powerful", but, generally speaking, 64-bit is better than 32-bit. I don't know much (if anything) about CPU architecture, so I really wasn't in a position to answer it.....:D

that's exactly why I asked :P, I wanted to see if it was just the 64bit shiney glow, and 'powerful' were your words :P

but I digress from the topic, and if I get much more OT I might get some letter bombs from Preator
