i got a 80Gb 7200rpm hdd for my birthday, partitioned it (15Gb and 65Gb) tried to install xp on the smaller partition. it copied the settup files over alright but when it tried to go into the main setup bit it errored,. i cant rememeber what error it was, something about not being able to find afile or something. its nothiong to do with the cd because i can install it fine on other hard drives. but the wierd thing is, if i put a second hdd in, i found a spare 2Gb (ouch i know) installed xp on that, then tried to continue the installation on the partition it worked fine. now i can only boot my pc when the 2 Gb is in. it doesnt use this as the windows,it still uses the samll partition (d:\). the thing is being such an old hard drive it crunches like a fat boy on cookies. can you think of anything i could do to use the 80Gb hdd on itd own. i tried using it as one big partition but still nothing.

If I were you I would try a few more things,

1) Format your new HDD, or delete the partitions and start again on a clean HDD.

2) You can either install windows XP on the full disk, or re-partition it to say 10Gb and 70Gb.

If it continues not to work then you have a HDD problem, take it back and have it tested. If it does work then you've solved the problem.

 coherence lost.... how many drives and how many partitions are involved

ITs all sorted now. My neighbour bought a new external harddrive so he gave me one of his 40GB internals. i got windows installed on that and now i just use the 80GB for storage. Thanks for your help though
