I helped a friend build a new computer, with all the parts new off of new egg, except for a dvd burner. We put it all together. The motherboard (by Epox) has a post port debug LED, which is suppost to display messages as it boots. The only message it gives is FF which means boot attempt. It will run for a few min. and shut off. The first time we tried it we smelt some smoke and quickly turned it off. By searching around on the net, we found out that, that could mean that the CPU is bad. But the CPU fan doesn't spin either, which is of course plugged into the mobo. If we plug in the IDE cable into the harddrive, and the burner they won't do anything. But if we leave just the power plugged into them, the burner tray will at least open, and we can hear the HDD spin. So does this sound like a bad mobo or a bad CPU to you guys?

I'm not familiar with your specific board (You failed to give any specifc details), but make sure that you have both of the power cables plugged into the MB. There is a 4-pin plug and a 20-pin plug. Both need to be plugged in. Sounds like that might be the problem. Good luck.

on my psu(ez cool) i have two plugs with four pins in a square, to be honest i don't know what the other one is for(maybe pci express(i don't have)) but it is VERY similar to the four pin power connector that you need to use, the only difference is that the terminals plastic surrounds are keyed to fit into the correct socket BUT with a little bit of effort could mistakenly be connected onto wrong mobo plug:(
 
No we plugged in both cables. Here is the list of parts we put in. Copied and pasted from the newegg cart. We left off the graphic and sound cards, and were just going to use the onboard stuff untill everything else was up.
