I want to stay in the Intel line, right now i have a P4 2.4C. whats a good Intel processor anywhere from 2.8-3.2 GHZ. i know the prescotts were known for overheating, so i would like to stay away from them, any suggestions.
Thanks

I've got a 3.2 hyperthreading and a 2.8 dual core in two different computers. Both run hot like you said, but if you set the heatsink well, you can get idles in the upper 30's with the 3.2 and mid 40's with the 2.8. Definitely get a good aftermarket heatsink, of the two I tried, I liket the zalman best. Both of those are LGA775 chipsets and the dual core neds a 945+ chipset, so your current board may not support either though. But of the two, I like the dual core better, it's faster for most of the things I do with my computers.

You might want to go with an AMD processor, but if you really want an intel get a new 65 nm fab. Although you're probably going to need to upgrade your motherboard as well as suprasteve said.

A budget might be helpfull, as well as the system specs and what you use the computer for :)

He may not be gaming, so AMD wouldnt be the best choice for non-gamers. I would go with a P4 3.2Ghz w/HT. Prescott or not, any late model Intel will get hot, but just get a different heatsink and you should be all set.

well i will be doing some gaming with it,im building a whole new comp, forgot to mention that. heres my current specs
P42.4c
Asus P4P800se deluxe
1.5gb Ram
crappy video card

my motherboard now does not support PCI express X 16 which is what i want for a video card, so ill be giving my old comp to bro and making me self a new machine. are AMD better for gaming? how about some suggestions for a nice CPU and Motherboard then, for some nice gaming
Thanks

The 65nm architecture on the netburst has a short life cycle. With intel about to radically change its chip architecture in Q3 I would hold off; normally i say dont bother waiting as new technology is always coming out. But for my money this may be a change worth waiting for, especially with the new dual cores coming on this architecture

If you're gaming definetly go AMD.

AMD curently has the desktop performance crown, but if you really want to get an Intel... get an Intel ;)

well im looking to spend around 150-200 U.S and i want an upgrade to my P4 2.4C so how about some options from both Intel and AMD, what ones are good to take a look at?

sorry i keep coming up with ?'s
now do AMD's have any heat issues like alot of the Intel P4 chips do?

what motherboard would you reccomend for that AMD 64 3500 that has atleast two pci X16 slots.
Thanks
