Looking to upgrade my AM3 Athlon II X2 3.4 to the cpu listed below. I know Phenom is better than Athlon but this is an AM2+ socket...

Is this a good buy...I'll be getting it used for $50.

Also, I was under the impression that AM3 board could accept an AM2+ socket or am I wrong?

No, the Phenom I 9850 only supports DDR2 memory. You have a DDR3 board. The Phenom I 9850 is a older processor. You need to look for a Phenom II processor, except the Phenom II 920 and 940, these two are DDR2 processor too. This is the processor support list.

Ok cool, thanks! I'll keep looking for an Athlon II x4 or Phenom II. Trying to pick one up used as opposed to buying brand new.

Phenom II X4 965 BE, should work with that motherboard.

AM2+ boards can support AM3 cpu's. Not the other way.
