My new PC:

Lian li blue ring case
Intel quad core 2.66 ghz
Asus mobo p53
4gb ram
Ati radeon 4870 hd graphics card
750gb hard drive
Samsung disc drive

I'm new to the whole comp building thing, but I got help from a brother. I loaded xp pro onto my desktop with the view to upgrading to vista ultimate soon. First problem I have encountered is that when I click on 'my computer' and click on the hard drive icon it comes up 127gb total space. This obviously contradicts the fact I have a 750gb hard drive. Now I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but is that down to something called partioning of the hard drive?

Second problem is that when I try to start half life 2 lost coast, it loads then just quits every time. I also tried to load medal of honor airborne and it installs for a long time then just comes up some sort of error message and nothing happens. I put the disc in again and it just comes up the install otpion. Very frustrating. Could this be something to do with my screen or that fact I need vista perhaps for my graphics card. I have no clue. Anyway any feedback would be much appreciated, cheers.

I dont know about the games, but with it not showing the full hard drive i do. That disk probably has xp sp1 on it and sp1 only allows hds up to 127gb. So try by downloading the sp2 update. That should fix it.

i didnt think just by sp2 upgrade it would release the rest of the h/d capacity!!!

prob cos ive never used xp bellow sp2

Bob is right XP Sp1 does only allow so much utilized HD space. Or maybe when you reformatted it you did not partition the HD to use all of it.

To solve all of your problems, you might want to try the following.

  1. Backup any important files you need to keep
  2. Insert your XP install disk, and reboot (boot from the disk)
  3. Choose the option to perform a fresh install
  4. When it asks which partition/hdd to use, press D to delete all current partitions, and then use setup to create a single new partition (this maybe the problem)
  5. Observe any error messages/errors in the install and write them down
  6. When install is done, visit www.microsoft.com and run a search for XP Service Pack 3 (yes, there is a 3 now people)
  7. Install that, and then restart your computer when prompted
  8. You should now have all of your hard drive space
  9. Ensure all Windows Updates are installed, and antivirus and security software is up to date (I use AVG Internet Security Pro)
  10. Download the latest graphics drivers for your graphics card (www.nvidia.com or ati.amd.com)
  11. Install your games and try running them again
  12. Post any errors you had during setup/running the games back here

Please post back when you're done (with errors/messages if there are any). I think this should fix all of your problems.

Ensure the graphics drivers are official drivers from nVidia or ATi, by downloading them from the sites provided above only. Others may work, but they may be "edited".

If this doesn't work, try getting the latest hardware drivers for your PC components, and updating your BIOS if necessary. If you need help with that, post here and I'm sure someone will help you.

Sorry for the long post. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for all the help guys. Just received my vista ultimate upgrade today. My games work on it and my sound is now working. Is there an SP2 for Vista?

Cheers
