Dear Experts

I am sick of this issue, I have been experiencing same issue in the thread below :

http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1546104

I have got 4 hdds two IDEs (each one 40 GB to be used for storage purpose) and two SATAs (Seagate 500 GB and western digital 1 TB).

SATA Seagate 500 GB has two NTFS partitions named as show below C name as ST_OS (for OS windows 7 ultimate 64 bit) and G named ST_STORAGE (for a storage purpose) I can rename them to whatever I like,,,,please see the snap shot below :

SATA western digital 1 TB has two NTFS partitions as well named F and J ,,,,, please see the snap shot above, whenever I (username that has admin privilege) rename (Right click properties then rename or through diskmgmt.msc tool to edit the drive name) those two partitions as below :

F --> WD_STORAGE2
J --> WD_STORAGE1

I won’t be able to see the names, only I see the letters ( i.e. F and J ) for them
While when I access my computer through the ‘ Safe Mode’ (F8 boot process) I was able to see the name and letter for the SATA western digital 1 TB , please see the snap shot below :

F --> WD_STORAGE2
J --> WD_STORAGE1

I have shared those two partitions [ F --> WD_STORAGE2), J --> WD_STORAGE1 ] on my home network I can see names and letters on other computers that have those two partitions mounted to them (map network drive)

Why am I experiencing this issue ?

Do I need always to live with register editing

Those two partitions F and J.They are on the same Seagate HDD which is 1 TB in size right?

If yes,first backup ALL important data from them,completely turn off the UAC and then go to the Disk Management,delete ALL partitions and logical drives from that HDD and everything else you have all until you do not finish with the BLACK color and with the title that says UNALLOCATED SPACE.Now again create 2 partitions and be sure you use SECONDARY DRIVE option,not the PRIMARY DRIVE and give them both the same letter...F and J.Now simply format each partition "F" and "J" using the file system you want.I recommend the NTFS one.And also give the name you want for the each partition before you start the formatting process.After they are both formatted,be sure that the status says HEALTHY.

Try this first and let us know how it passed.

Cheers!

Hi

I downloaded Partition Wizard and installed it but I have not used it yet.
When I browsed the program I can see the names are there for F --> WD_STORAGE2
J --> WD_STORAGE1,,,,,,,,,,,please see the snapshot below :

I am going to use Partition Wizard to achieve what you have suggested
Now again create 2 partitions and be sure you use SECONDARY DRIVE option,not the PRIMARY DRIVE
Do you mean I have to use the logical option not the primary one ? because I could not find the secondary option under Partition Wizard

Yes use the LOGICAL option and use the Disk Management from Windows to achieve this because you really do not need any programs for that.

In that case do what I said above and tell us how it passed.It doesn't matter if it's Seagate or WD.
Yes it worked.

Are you trying to say that we should have a specific number of primary drives ?

Thanks

Glad it worked :D

Well what I am saying is that you should have only ONE PRIMARY SYSTEM partition on the HDD and all other partitions on that same HDD should be extended ones,I mean logical ones...
Unless if you want to have dual boot operating systems or more,but you do not need more then one operating system unless if you are a crazy operating system tester lol.

Thanks S.T.A.R.S. for your tip (delete partitions and recreate them) that i was not aware of it .

What you said in the quote is true for a one physical disk you can have up to 4 primary partitions.

But my case I have got 4 different physical hdds not only one and each hdd has only two primary partitions which is still within the acceptable limitation (up to 4).

I did another test by converting the logical partition (F) to a primary partition and still I can see the name that I had given to that partition.

From this test I realized that deleting a partition and recreating them fixed the issue (not being able see the name).

But whether a partition is a primary or a logical doesn't matter.

Thanks
