Hi all wondering what you all think

well i just came across this forum and it looks good to me being somwhat of a computer geek but i was wondering what you all thought of this system

amd athlon xp2200+ socket a
512 generic ram
sound blaster live 24 bit
sis 730 mobo
radeon 9200 128 agp
12x dvd burner /52x cdrw

and latley ive started thinking of overclocking it but i was wondering if any of you here have tryed ocing socket a athlon xps and what i need to lookout for here i really need to look and see if i need to make any bridge conections on the chip but hopefully my only limitation is this crappy board and any sugestions on a new board and where to get it would be helpfull thanks all and i hope to become a long time member here:)
 
It just looks kinda outdated, but i've tried to overclock my 2800+ @ 2.08 and i got it to 2.3 Ghz w/ raise the v-core a couple of notches then the board wouldn't let it go any futher....
and i have no idea on recommending a good socket a board:P
 
Generally the best overclocking board for an Athlon XP is the ASUS A7N8X. You may be able to find one on eBay, although I wouldn't pay more than $30 for one, as the Athlon XP is a relatively outdated platform as of now.

Also, what kind of RAM are you using? You many want to look into investing in some cheap PC3200 if you don't have any already.

And no, you don't need to make any bridge connections to OC by raising the FSB. If you wanted to unlock your Athlon XP's multiplier (so you can raise the clock speed without raising the FSB), then you would need to look into making some bridge connections, which isn't a suitable task for a beginner.

When you do OC, make sure that your temps stay below 60-65C. If they do go above that, I would reccoment looking for an aftermarket HSF, as that has the potential to drop your temperatures drastically.
 
When did you buy the processor? Cause AMD started to lock their CPU's week 39, year 2003. Athlon XP's manufactured before that are factory unlocked.
 
well just to let everyone know im not exactly a noob ive been building computers for about 10 years now :) but can anyone show me what the bridges look like if there locked and unlocked? and i didnt buy the system origonaly a friend did and i bought it off him
 
my first build was about 1 year ago, i used an athlon xp barton 2800+ on a biostar m7ncd ultra board, overclocking it was pretty easy, but i didn't make it very high, i was messing with it about a month ago and i raised it to like 2.5 ghz which caused it to stop turning on so i had to clear the cmos but if you know a little bit more about overclocking than i do you could probably overclock it pretty easily. the m7ncd was pretty good for it, nothing special though, but if you're using an athlon xp you probably don't need anything real special.
 
personally, i'd leave it the way it is. it should play most games... not at high or medium quality. overclocking is normally for bragging rights.
what do you plan on doing with the computer? i think its a nice computer and should last you quite some time... when vista is released you may want to consider upgrading to 1gb of memory... but other than that depending on what you like to "compute" then you should be fine.

i mean, if you burn dvd's and surf the internet and do regular daily stuff then sure its a great computer. personally i prefer the highest qualities in my games and being able to do crazy amounts of stuff with my comp... but im picky and ridiculous about my computer. lol
 
well now since i last wrote on this ive upgraded the motherboard and memory dont know what board it is now but will find out later got 1 gig of corsair memory and now 320 gigs of hd and a new laptop might not be the best but its better than this one its a compaq f572us amd x2 athlon 64 1.7 gig 1 gig ram and a piss ant 80 gig hd and winblows vista but yeah those are the things ive gotten lately on the laptop im gonna be upgrading the hd and memory once i get the cash also thinking of installing windows xp pro and to hell with vista
