It will work, yes. But it can be done better for cheaper.
1. 3820 is not necessary. Get a 3770k and you will be better off, and faster. But you wont be able to upgrade to a 6 core later.
2. Z77 would be cheaper, and just as useful.
3. Get a Kepler or GCN based graphics card. Better performance and will help with upgrades later.

Defs more on the CPU and less on the GPU! Though those 6 cores on the x79 are tempting...
Sorry but for gaming you want to spend more on the GPU than the CPU. The 3770K will be more than enough for what he needs. No need to waste money by buying a more powerful chip.
