Personally anytime when I am not plugged in I always turn the battery settings down to "balance" and turn the brightness down quiet a bit which usually helps.
If you already do this I am not at all surprised if the laptop came with a lower end battery, it is not uncommon in the PC market.
How does one overcharge the battery of a modern laptop?
Yeah you can't really overcharge batteries these days. That hasn't been a thing in well over 10+ years.

Smart batteries and charger. they are the best and will stop charging when needed. Cheap batteries can be a problem. i don't know if they have smart chargers built into a laptop. don't recall seeing one. On the other hand i have family that will plug in say a cell phone or laptop at 7: in the evening and leave in for 8, 10 or 12 hrs before unplugging. Not good. they do it every day. and run down to zero volts sometime. Not good. keep telling them minimum 20%. they wont listen.
You don't need to charge at 20%. It's if you get below 10% you start running into trouble. Phones and other devics are also smart these days and don't overcharge.
Phones and laptops have intelligent charging mechanisms that are independent of the battery itself. You can leave them plugged in for months, once capacity is reached they revert to a trickle charge to keep the cells full.
In fact, religiously taking off the charger when reaching 100% introduces additional charge cycles to your batteries leading to a lesser usable lifespan.

Most people are troubled that the battery usage time they get is drastically less than what the manufacturer claimed. Most of the time, when a manufacturer listed the battery of having 4-5 hours, users actually get about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The reason is, manufacturer listed the time "under ideal condition", which means turning the screen brightness to the point you almost can't see what's on the screen, sporotic/intermittent use, minimal disk activities, and so on so forth. Most of us actually "use" the computer, which is quite different from the "ideal condition".
Also, in order to get the list price low, the standard battery is 3 or 4 cells. A top line battery has 9 cells.
I have been buying extra ac adapter for every laptop I'd purchased. The battery is only for backup if powerful fails, and in rare occasion when I was waiting to board a plane in the airport.
Do you know that the mileage sticker on a new car is the mileage they get from Phoenix AZ to Los Anagels? That stretch of road is like coming down a slide (Phoenex is over 1,000 ft above sea level). I can go on and on about the lies manufacturers of various products made unrealistic claims (the life of CF bulbs, another good example).
