High CPU usage

I'm running xp home edition and have been getting disconnections all the time and very erratic CPU usage. Task manager revealed that iexplore.exe was using the most but I found it hard to pinpoint exactly what was running in the background. Then I noticed on Microsoft's home page that there's a newer version of my browser.......explorer7!! I installed it and all the problems I had disappeared. I'm no computer buff but if this info helps anyone else in similar circumstances that would be brilliant.:)

Most likely IE 6 developed a software problem on your mechine that probably would have been corrected by reinstalling IE 6. Upon the upgrade that also corrected this with the installation of the new IE 7 browser. On the other hand some people that upgraded to IE 7 without problems decided to go back to IE 6 afterwards. In some cases it was just a matter of lowering the security settings which seem to have a higher default due to newer features.

My pc doesn't disconnect any more which was the main issue but cpu is still going a little berserk. I play a lot of card games (not for money) and my computer lags which is annoying.

That could be due to what is running in the background besides the services included in Windows. What are you using to monitor cpu activity? Are these card games downloaded or installed from cd?

Hi the games are downloaded, not from a cd. I logged on this morning and all my pld probs resurfaced ie cpu going crazy and disconnections. I updated java and it has sorted it for now....god only knows whats going on in that machine lol:)
