High End Desktop to Run Server 2008?

At the moment, im doing some spending to write some $$ off on tax. I've thought about doing a big spend and buying a server rack and a few blades to run just a home network on and thought, why not just buy a high end desktop and a license of Server 2008 [yeah thats an expense in itself].

I am planning on running a multi-user home network with VPN connections, as my dad loves to work from home and frankly, so do i.
I want to host my website and run various other Windows Server services.

My question is:

Do you think this bare basic desktop will hold up to the challenge at hand?

It appears to meet all of the system requirements to run Server 2008 without the loss of functionality. I got my Server 2008 license today :D and promptly need a cheap system to run the OS off.

AND

As an aside note, i will document every step i do, in establishing this rather complex home network, for those forum members wanting a cheapo solution [minus the server 2008 costs lol] to a rather crafty home network.

that may work, it really all depends on how hard it will be used. for 2 people it should be fine, for 200, it will not hold up. At my school we ordered a dell with a 2, quad core processor (2GHz) 4 GB ram for our 400 students. server 2008 does take a lot of resorces.

It should work. I would ask if it has a network adapter though because I don't see it in the listing. For an OS I would strongly recommend Windows Server Small Business Edition because it will give you more flexibility by including more options in the OS.

Every motherboard these days (or 99.999% of them) have a integrated network adapter. 10/100, or in the more expensive ones, gigabit (10/100/1000)

Yes, i agree if i was looking at a server environment, i would not be buying this computer to run a simple 4 user, comprising of both laptops and desktops, home network.

Server 2008 i agree does take alot of resources, but thats once again if you are running Terminal Services and are running expanded group policy and have roughly 50-60 users. In this case i think the loss in quality and speed across the network will be minimal to non-existant.

Good Computer for it:

Quad Core
4GB of Ram
1TB hard drive
+ plus the other stuff

That'd be useful for a department in a corporation. As im not intending on running anything insane and don't plan on doing anything insane, like making a games server or hosting LAN parties, i think its best to not spend up hugely and just roll with something that exceeds the minimal system requirements of an 08 install.

Thanks for your reply also mate.

Well for the min requirements, i would say just go for a little higher the the min requirements.
