High ping in games

Ok so i have a broadband connection that i tested on speedtest.net



Now I play castle wolfenstein:enemy territory quite often, but my ping time ranges from 300-1000.

why does it do that? i thought my connection was pretty fast.

and why can people play using dial-up connections when i cant play properly haha.

is there any way i can fix it?

oh and i dont have downloads or msn messenger running while i play.
 
Bandwidth and latency are different things. The only way to reduce latency is to get closer to the server. High traffic can cause latency too but distance is usually the bigger problem with game servers.
 
Yes. Seeing as it looks like you're an Aussie, it may be a little hard to find a lot of servers that are close.
 



I also have a question. Howcome i ping 34-45 in newyork servers on counterstrike when this is lower?

I have tested this many times, ping ranging from 15-25
 
Pick a server that's further away for the test. Try one in california or something, your ping will be higher. It's the same thing for the counterstrike servers.
 
to give you an idea of ping i run a hl2 server in the uk and i have a friend in canada (torronto) that comes on my server and his ping is around 120-140,
i also have friends in the uk that play on my server and there pings are around
20-25. so the extra 3500 miles means that my mate in canadas ping is around 100 more.
