So...today, my pc crashed, so I reformatted it. Upon installing my antivirus and letting it do it's quick scan, it finds an infection. Here is some info about it:

Virus: BOO/TDss.M
Type: Boot Sector Virus
In the wild: Yes
Reported Infections: Low
Distribution Potential: Low
Damage Potential: Low
Static file: Yes
File size: 512 Bytes
MD5 checksum: e150aa222b36a35132cc917c79ed87d1

General Method of propagation:
• No own spreading routine

Aliases:
• Kaspersky: Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.mbr
• F-Secure: Rootkit.Win32.TDSS.mbr
• Bitdefender: Rootkit.MBR.TDSS.B
• Avast: Alureon-G@mbr
• Microsoft: Trojan:DOS/Alureon.A
• AVG: Win32/Alureon.MBR
• Grisoft: Win32/Alureon.MBR
• DrWeb: BackDoor.Tdss.4005
• Norman: TDSSmbr.A

I don't think it's an actual virus. I mean, I literally just installed Windows 7 ultimate x64. Just wondering of a course of action. Did a light Google search....but every link I click turns up blank. Kind of annoying.

TDSS/Alureon is a well known rootkit... definitely something someone might sneak into a pirated copy of Windows... just say'n.

I would run Kaspersky's TDSSkiller.

It basically allows malicious code to run at startup. You may also see some side effects of the computer running really slow at bootup, like having less then 128mb of memory running XP(remember those days?) It's a nasty rootkit and another thing that may help to let you know that you may have it is that most ISP's detect something like this(I know comcast does anyway) and they will send you an email saying you are infected and need to get it cleaned up.
