today i went over to my friends house to try to fix her internet problem. and when u go online, certain sites work and certain sites dont. so if u encounter a site that wont work, then a blue screen of death pops up sayin that u may have installed new hardware and it may not be working properly. ok, so i manually shut it down.
next, i go to device manager and there are like 5 items that have a yellow exclamation marks (!) on them:
ethernet controller
multimedia audio controller
pci modem
smbus controller
video controller (vga compatible)

so thats all the ones that have (!) signs to them.

the wierd thing about it is, she is able to go on AIM, and certain sites such as google, myspace. yada yada. but.... half the time it just gives her the instant blue screen.

i dont get this. has anyone encountered this problem before? do i need to download and like update the drivers for all the ones with (!) next to them? or wat? im sry if this explanation is a lil bit unclear. so if u have any questions about the situation, please ask. its late, and im sleep, my eyes hurt. and yea.

hope u guys can help me help my friend.

Sounds like the system has become unstable. This happens when a lot of programs are installed and uninstalled -- lots of junk registry entries are left behind. You can try something like Registry Mechanic or Systemworks to clean up the registry, but best bet is to use your restore CD or wipe the drive and reload Windows. You'll have to reload all your programs and favorites, however. If you've created a restore point in XP, you could try that, also. Best practice is -- once you've got a stable system and all your programs loaded, make an image with something like Ghost, and then you can reload everything (including programs) by restoring your backup image.

I would first repair everything in the device manager by reinstaling the device drivers.

What browser are you using? Have you tried a different browser?

Also are you using xp? If so do a scf /scannow to check all windows files!

if that doesnt work, then ill either reformat her comp and yea, give her ghost er somin. actually, she might still be under warranty. do u guys think Sony will replace the computer? or wat would they do? lol

well first i tried IE, then firefox. firefox seemed to let me go on more websites actually.

Does not change the fact that there are so many problems in device manager. I would fix those first.

yea ok, maybe u can help me out on this one part...... i tried to update the drivers automatically, which was one of the options they provided me, but it couldnt find the drivers. and she doesnt seem to have any of the cds that the comp came with. sooo how can i do this? do i need the model of the controllers? if so.. then how would i go and find them, other than having to open up the computer?

First find out what components are having the trouble then Identify them. You should be able to do this a various ways for example if you hit start then run then type in dxdiag you'll get info on what sound is installed video etc. You'll find info right in the device manager although sometimes its not the best at times a bit of info is still better then none in this case. Then search the net for the drivers and install one at a time.
