Hmmmm now is this legal?

Ok, now one of my favourite games (Quake 2) stopped working because the disc was completely buggered. i was so desperate i downloaded a copy (from bittorrent) but seeing as i already bought the game is it legal that i downoaded a backup copy?

I am not entirely sure about the legality of that, but I guess it is legal in that sense. However, you would need to keep the original in order to prove that you have it legally. Also use the serial supplied with your original.

duly noted, i did use my serial and i do have the original disc so i think im in the clear

I doubt it's totally legal just because the version might be different, how you uptained it, etc... I see no reason this should be a problem espcailly if you used your serial number, but to answer you're question, I suspect it would be illegal...

my mom justifies downloading from limewire cause she had all the albums originally anyways, still don't think that would hold up in court, figure the same for your situation, but I sincerely doubt anybody's going to care

What the authorities have a problem with is that you were simultaneously uploading the game to people that most likely did not have a legal copy, so yes it can be considered illegal. But I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think that anyone would care, as long as you have proof that you have a license for it.
