Holy cow, P4 temperatures never cease to amaze...

Well, i've spent the better part of my evening try to figure out why my computer's performing so poorly today.

Everything's stop & go, like the computer would literally just lock up for a second every few seconds, if that makes any sense.

Well, i gave up and got into bed, and about 20 minutes into a movie, my computer just shut itself off.

Upon reboot, i went into the bios menu, and went to the hardware monitor, to find my CPU temperature at 98 degrees celcius!!!!

Holy crap, i hate this computer.

I cleaned the air filters on my case, opened my case and turned the case fans up to high, and my temps are down to 76 now.

It's amazing how quickly the air filters get clogged on the p180.... I've only had the case for ~2 months, i didn't expect it to be COMPLETELY clogged already.

turns out that WAS what was degrading my performance.

Newsleecher's back to ~600kB/s with temps stable around 74-76 degrees.

Earlier today, it was only hitting about 350kB/s, and making the entire computer's performance chug to boot.

I never knew heat/poor airflow could ruin performance that much, as my factory HP case had no airfilter to get clogged.

Must have been a Prescott, my old Northwood never went over 45c at 3.5ghz(stock 2.66ghz) and a 1.8v v-core. Was a decent CPU and great overclocker till i decided to try and remove the IHS and chipped the CPU. Oh well, its only worth like $50 these days anyway.

If your CPU is really running that hot constantly, especially if its running anywhere near 90c at idle, i would STRONGLY suggest you either replace the CPU or get a new bigger case with watercooling(very expensive but with temps like that i dont think increased airflow is gonna help a great amount, might lower it down 10-20c and thats still too hot). As far as i know, 90c+ constantly would kill a CPU after a day if it last that long. Your lucky if that CPU last you another week at those temps.

I believe a CPU dies at 120c after a few seconds. My old Northwood did hit 130c once, but that was cuz my heatsink wasnt on correctly, i fixed that problem in a hurry! And it didnt even lock up! Although it was running very slow (most likely the throttle-down kicked in).

at least you dont have a intel celeron d Prescott i think those heat up faster, and when it does get too hot it dosent even degraded it self or shut down by itself you have to shut it down maualy and that what i hate about a intel celeron d

How high did you see your D go to?

Good choice on the Dual Core 1.6 Ghz replacement of the Intel Celeron D.

Kent.

i'm back down to the low 70's at full load now.

I just neglected the air filters on the p180, as i've never had a case with screens before.

I had no idea that they would get clogged so fast. Or have that much of an impact on temps when they did.

And it IS a prescott. It's a prescott 3.6, which was only available for a short time, due to the heat problem. Probably one of the worst CPUs ever crafted by intel.
