I have a pc that will shutdown quite a bit while surfing the web. It sometimes give the blue screen of death and today it had "win32k.sys" was the problem. It has been other things in the past.

It is a AMD 2000
Radeon 8500LE
WD 80gig
512mb kingston ram
Asus A7N8X deluxe
win XP Pro

I am wanting to wipe the system and clean off the hard drive. I have a new video card and 2 sticks of 512 (3200) Ram to upgrade it with. What do I need to do before re-formatting this thing? I am burning some of my documents, so I won't lose them.

Thanks

Its a good idea to start backing up your files, but I don't think it's necessary to reformat just yet. If you really want to go ahead, but I would wait for better assistance. I'll see what I can do ;)

Thanks

I am going to copy all of my documents, e-mails etc. to cd's. Hope to get around to the upgrade and re-formatting this weekend.

I hope I don't have a bad motherboard, cpu or something making it shut down everynow and then.

Is the power supply sufficient/plenty correctly working? Do you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed?

I have a Enemax 365p-ve power supply

(how would I check the voltage)

There are a few websites that it just shuts down on, regularly. As well sometimes when playing games.

It seems like maybe when it gets under stress (lack of better word) it will restart. I have gotten the "blue screen of death" several times.

I have bought 2 new sticks of ram and a Geforce FX 5200 video card to upgrade and help the system. After I wipe the Hard Drive if you think that is the route to go.

Gosh thats a hard PSU to directly find specs for but you can have a look at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...E456-1014&SRCCODE=CNETFEEDCI&CMP=OTC-CNETFEED .... at 26A on the 12V rail its a pretty decent PSU but you should still keep an eye on the voltage :)

ASUS Probe (see your CD or the ASUS website) will have a readout for you :)

Also have a look at checking memory :) http://www.google.ca/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://www.memtest86.com/&e=7507

I went to the site for the memory test and downloaded the one for windows, couldn't run the test "not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications." Is what the error box says.

I might have tried the wrong one to download.

Thats because you have to run MemTest from bootup :)

When i had my really old computer, i would get the "blue screen of death" message when i was doing something on the computer for about 30 min or so, turned out the fan on my cpu wasnt working, so the cpu overheated and stopped working. (Then i used a house fan to blow air into it :P)

The cpu fan is working, not sure how well. I have a window in the case and it looks good, but looks might be deceiving.

Have the memory test on floppy, but ole xp doesn't seem to bootup from the A:

I have never noticed it, so this seems like a stupid question but is there a certain way to boot up in XP?

Couldn't get this thing to boot from the A Drive. Had it set for that in Advanced BIOS.... So no memory test, but I do have 2 new sticks of 512 to up grade with when I figure out the reason for the continued shutdowns and blue screens.

The cpu runs at temps around 46 C and 114 F
Motherboard - 30C adn 86 F
CPU fan running at 4753 rpm's

I got a blue screen with (PFN_LIST_CORRUPT) on it.

Would it be best to save my documents and e-mail addresses and wipe this sucker clean?

Then add the new Ram and video card?

Thanks

Do ya mean do a wipe and reset?

Also forgot to mention like when looking at espn or foxsports website it will give me the error message box, wanting to send a report to microsoft.

Anyway it is a multimedia error targeting flash.ocx?

Any suggestions......maybe throw a grenade in the case and run?? :P
