A friend of mine wants to set up his own forum.
I've been planning on making my own web server.
Can I build my own server, to host that forum and maybe a few other sites that I would make?

In the end, how much would all of this be? Including the server.

How much should go into the computer?

And linux for the OS right?

Thanks

However much you want to spend! A cheaper dual core, 2Gb of ram maybe. Nothing special, unless you are hosting a huge forum with hundreds of thousands of members.

SBC is a large business networking company, tlarkin knows all about this stuff. He told me that Verizon blocks port 80 and sure enough they do. I can't wait until FioS is in my area. I don't think they block the business class FioS. Where SBC is pretty big, I would say no but, maybe they do on residential service.

I have sbc, as far as I know they dont block it. Your server specs dont have to be great, my server Im currently running is a 2.0ghz celery with only 512mb of ram. Used to be a 500mhz celery with 128mb of ram. What matters is your upload speed. From my sbc service I get 700(or something)kb/s, and I have the fastest they offer (in my area). Thats fine for my small server, if you intend to have quiet a few people, your going to need at least a T1.

EDIT: Some extra info, ya Redhat Fedora core 7 as an OS. Then use Apache 2.2 as the Http server.

We're paying for the elite highest package.
We are getting Down - 5mb and Up - 500-600

Cause of the server location.

Id be hosting a forum with people who would visit and post text, pictures, ext.

Thanks

IF you have the money to spare, build a server with an E4300 or one of the new Allendale Pentiums. Dual Core+1Gb of RAM+SATA HDDs, should be a pretty nice and fast server.

Yeah, sure thing, if I did this, I would just run the server computer off of a KVM and have it under my desk or maybe log into it by going through your home LAN. I am just going to go mid-ATX, there is no use in a full-tower for a personal server.
