Home-made DVD to AVI

Someone asked me about this and I really don't know the best methods because I never convert down like this. It's always DVD to DVD or AVI to DVD for me, but never DVD to AVI

So what do you guys think? Pretty much we're working with a DVD camcorder here and I'm looking for free software. Preferably a single program solution...
