And i need a sata controller card, he wants to be able to use all 8 bays in the computer and with the DVD drive he only has 5 ports left, and idk what a good brand card is to get or anything.

#1. Your going to need some SATA to Molex adapters. The PSU only has 6 native SATA power ports.

everything else looks good to me. You could save money going with a 970 board and dropping the card. Would be just fine for a server.

And we can not help with the cracked server. He will likely never replace it.

You don't need that RAM for a server, regular stuff is often fine, you usually don't need any sort of performance memory. The amount you get is more important than the speed when it comes to servers. 16GB would be nice.

Do what Wolfe said and get a different board which supports integrated graphics, that card likely isn't needed for a server.

Yes RAID-1 is when you duplicate two drives.

What exactly is he using this server for?

File storage and computer backups along with streaming videos to his tv's. I had picked that ram since it's 4 more than 1600 after the 10 off, but 16gb's does sound better.

and with the 32 off with the combo i think it's cheaper and better to get the 5450 than to get an older generation chipset to use with bulldozer don't you think? i was wondering if it would be smart to just go for an i3 combo or how much faster/slower would this be?

It will work fine, but really a server is not necessary to have the most up to date stuff. A 870 board would be just fine. And AMD made a jackassery move with the 900 series not having integrated graphics at all. With their line up, it is not a good business move.

An i3 would probably work fine. You can use integrated video if you use an i3 too. Maybe go for a 3570K though and use the integrated HD 4000? HD 4000 is actually very good for integrated graphics.

That RAM should be fine.

If it is just a server for files, go for 16GB and a Pentium or the like and use integrated. you do not need a top end. Ht will not be needed either. You can put a lot more to something else in the system doing that.

A extreme 4 has 8 SATA ports, so that would fill the role, and you could use a 2 SATA add in card to run the CD drive.

otherwise i might go to microcenter and get a 2500k and the mobo or something but it's a long drive and all and i'm supposed to meet him in atlanta to give him the computer so don't need to be running up there and back a lot.

But would that be better than the 8120 and all? he wants to stream blu-rays to his tv so how would that do? Still leaning towards the 8120 and 5450

Yeah an 8120 is overkill for this system. You can play Blu-Rays on integrated graphics, I know because I've done it on the HD 3000! The i3 and Z77 board should be fine. Maybe if you struggle with the graphics you can throw a cheapo card in there.

updated original list, does it look right, anything you'd change at all, might ask if he wants a cooler and since i already have the h50 and an intel bracket that's work good, can't overclock but would keep it cool and quiet.

oops, forgot to delete that, it wasn't meant to be there.

I hate talking to my dad about the stuff, he kept asking me stupid questions just to be safe and all but he gets me thinking something WILL go wrong when there is so little chance

Thanks for the ideas from this thread jonny. Have been looking at what to buy to rebuild mine and this had made me change my plan. Looks like an awesome as build. Will the OS run on one of the 2Tb drives? Also is home server 2011 better than 2008?

yes and idk, sorry but if you want to discuss this them make your own thread, trying to keep this one short and to the point so i don't have to go threw pages of off topic stuff.

I also need suggestions for the SATA controller card, the new case is a 10 bay and he wants it ready to use them all, hat that adding it will add more wires running around so it will not look as nice.

And Wolfe, how many molex to fan converters will i need, they have doubles where 1 molex is 2 fans, but idk how many fan pins the motherboard has, will check newegg but if you can verify it would be great.

Any changes you can see? he might be ordering this in just a few mins, maybe an hour

It seems way too overkill for a storage and media server. You could even use a Core2Duo and 4GB of RAM and be fine.

Ram seems over the top, it won't make any difference unless OCing. 1600 would be the same, even with OC the 2133 will just be a slight difference.

well it's on sale so has a 10 off promo so it's only 4 more than what i would's gotten so i think it's a good deal.

I believe he has ordered it and said he'd pay me 120 and i'd keep 30 in rebates :D and some other stuff with my computer on ebay and some other stuff he wanted help with means i might be making some big bucks about now :D
