Hi all

My wife has a laptop running Windows Vista that is connected wirelessly to a router.
I have a desktop running Windows XP that is hard wired to the same router, and which is connected to a printer via USB.

Is it possible that my wife can access the desktop to retieve files from there and send documents straight to the printer? If so how? At the moment she is copying files to a stick and taking it between the two machines.

I'm sure there has to be a better way:D

Thanks for reading, have a nice weekend.

Hi tremmor

Thanks for the link. It didn't get my solution, but it gave me a bump along. I have now set the printer to allow sharing and the My Documents folder to allow sharing, but the I still can't get the laptop (Vista) to see them.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Thanks.

it worked for me. The reason i didn't use it long is it required me leave the computer on that was hooked up to the computer. i have three computers that need access to printer. a quick answer would be get a print server.

yes, you can do it quiet easly. i have not done this too much so i may be rusty but you just have to go to the controle pannel, go to printers right click the printer you want to share. then go to the share tab and select sharing. then you should be able to on the other computer go into start>network and make sure there is no tab at the top saying network sharing is disabled. if there is jut click it and enable it. give the page a sec to load and then click on the computer that shares the printer and the printer should be listed there.

for files, its the same thing, just right clikc the file and hit properties. then clikc share. go to the other computer and do the same thing.

Hi guys

Thanks for your continued input.
I have set the My Documents directory and the printer device on the desktop (XP) to shared. It now says I should be able to make the necessary settings on another machine to access them.

But from the laptop (Vista) I just can't see them. Am I missing something? I'm not that bothered about the printer, but I would really like to be able to share files.

Thanks for reading.

Well you can right click anything you want to share say a folder or a hard drive and go to properties and to sharing and select share this folder and select allow users to change or modify (or similar) and You type in what the folder or drives name will be for the other computers. And for the printer you just have to go to control panel and to printers and faxes right click go to properties and sharing tab and select share this printer. Make sure you have file and printer sharing on and you are all set.

P.S. Make sure all computers have the drivers for the printer
