Home Network Stress

Hi,
I am having a real problem here tying to create a home network, basically I have a desktop running Vista and a laptop that my wife uses running XP Home, now we both connect to the internet wirelessly and the router is a Netgear 614V7. What we want to do it to firstly share the printer that is connected to the desktop and secondly we want to be able to share files between the 2 computers (photos etc). I have looked on the internet at some of the help sites and they really dont seem to help. Is there anyone here who can tell me what I need to do and indeed if what I want to do is possible?

I would get a router that has a printer port, that way you connect the printer directly to the router, so you do not have to have a certain computer on all the time to print.

Also I have heard that there are a lot of problems connecting a XP machine with A Vista machine. Something about the Vista machine wants to reset the nick card on the xp machine.
